  • History

Through the foresight and efforts of an Episcopal Bishop, the Right Reverend Elisha Smith Thomas, and a group of prominent Salina businessmen, St. John’s Military School for boys opened in 1887. These men recognized the need for a disciplined educational and living environment for young boys and established a military school to be operated under church auspices. In the more than 125 years since, St. John’s Military School for boys has helped raise young men into outstanding leaders.

Today I am happy to say that the SJMS baseball team picked up where we left off from last year. We accomplished a sweep in our first double header, against Wichita home school. I will say we were at a disadvantage, having no games under our belt (due to rain). The boys were a little rusty in the beginning of the game. The opposing team already played three games, and they threw their best pitcher against us.

Wichita gained on us early scoring 4 runs in the first 3 innings. Our starting pitcher Brennan Pecora managed to get us through 2.5 innings with the game still within reach. Our bats came alive from the very beginning of the game, but unfortunately most of our hard hit balls were right to fielders.

Dalton Thibodeau entered the game in a high pressure situation with runners on 1st and 2nd base with 1 out, and was able to work through the inning only giving up a run. The very next inning the bats came alive and we scored 4 runs on multiple hits from Chase Fitzek, Josh Smith, Brennan Pecora, and Dalton Thibodeau.

We were able to pull ahead the following inning, to bring the game to 6-5. Chase Fitzek entered to close the game for the save. The second game was a blowout victory, we played three innings and won 24-0.

These SJMS cadets enjoyed some sightseeing in Washington, D.C. as part of their Spring Break service trip. Yesterday they worked in the Capitol Food Bank stocking shelves and packaging food for the homeless.

My grandson was not doing well in public school and would have gone to middle school the following school year. Daughter did research and found SJMS and grandson went to summer camp. When daughter went to pick him up at the end of camp, his first question to her was "Can I go to school here?" He was enrolled as a 6th grader is is now completing his third year. I cannot say enough good things about the school and the staff. My husband and I have dropped off, picked up and attended commencement week and it is so wonderful to see these young men. They have respect for each other as well as parents, staff and friends. The academic and athletic programs are top-notch all the way. Our grandson has matured so much and is becoming a very fine young man. Wonderful school, wonderful staff. THANK YOU SJMS for all that you do for these young men. Your dedication goes above and beyond!!

St. John's Military School affords boys an opportunity to achieve a level of excellence both academically and athletically, that a lot of other schools can not, do not or will not do. Dissatisfied with the deficiencies in the public school system, my folks interviewed 5 highly rated private preparatory and military schools around the United States, before they decided that St. John's Military School in Salina, Kansas, was the preferred choice for their son's schooling. The other schools, although good and ranked highly, really didn't have all of the factors they felt were important for my development, academically. And now, looking back 50+ years, they definitely made the correct decision.

My son started school at St. John's in September 2016 as a junior. Colorado schools had failed to meet my standards of education and accountability for him. Over the past six months I have seen his self confidence grow, his grades improve and his overall attitude change. St. John's Military School has changed his life direction, he knows right from wrong, he is responsible and accountable in ways I never thought possible. Seeing him and the other cadets over parents weekend was one of the proudest parent moments I've had in his lifetime. The brotherhood and pride of the cadets is immeasurable. I'm eternally grateful for the gift of St. John's Military School in my sons life. Truly an amazing staff, school and group of cadets!

We sent our son to St. John Military School Summer Camp to see if it would be a good fit for him/us. We were pleasantly surprised with his demeanor after the camp and decided to send him for the 2016-2017 school year. He has matured so much he has become more patient, loving, giving and compassionate with his entire family while caring about others. We give the staff a huge THANK YOU for taking our boy and showing him what a man walk is like.
