Summer Schools and Summer Camps

marine military academy summer camp

Summer is a busy time for every Military School. Many of the schools offer Summer Camps and Summer School programs, some of which are a mixture of school and camp. Families use the summer to explore the boarding school experience or as a time for something fun and educational to help their students learn & grow. Students make friends and develop skills that will last a lifetime. Most summer students/campers are new to military school.

ST Catherines Academy rock wall

Summer school sounds like a punishment for bad grades (it did for me in high school), and in some cases it may be. But at the Military Schools, summer school is not just sitting in a classroom, but an exciting structured time of challenges and trying new things. Summer School is a little more laid back, with off-campus trips and different afternoon activities. Structured study time remains, as well as small classes and close interaction between students and their teachers. Many students also use the summer to get ahead academically or to take a fun class not offered at home.

Summer camps are filled with their own challenging outdoor activities. Campers can learn to SCUBA, sail and rock climb. They play paintball and run confidence courses. They can experience the military part of military schools and prepare for admission to the military schools in the fall.

Notes for Parents
  • Summer students/campers are not required or expected to enroll for the school year, though many do.
  • Many summer students/campers travel to these programs. Arangements can be made for pickup at the airport.
  • This may be the first time your son/daughter has spent so much time away from your family. Make sure you are supportive and send them postal mail & care packages. Do not worry if they do not call you frequently, this just means they are involved in their new life on campus!
  • Remember to budget some spending money for off-campus activities.
  • Course credit is transferable to your current school.
  • Military schools and summer camps are not affiliated with the military.

We have listed the boarding tuition for all of these programs. If you are interested in enrolling as a day student, special discounts may be offered as well as special day programs. Having worked at several summer programs, I feel that in order to get the full experience, students should board there. Much of the team-building and friendship-making happens outside of the classroom.

Extreme Military Challenge

Coed - Battleground, Alabama
Extreme Military Camp

Extreme Military Challenge (XMC) is different from the other camps, as it exists only as a summer camp. Their offerings are a very gung-ho, high speed and motivated way to spend a summer. Cadets come from all over the country (about half fly in) to live in the barracks and experience the military lifestyle through realistic and challenging programs.

All XMC cadets must start with Cadet Basic Training before enrolling in other XMC camps. Several other XMC camps can be combined with Cadet Basic Training.

Cadet Basic Training

  • Ages: 13 - 18
  • Coed: Coed
  • Dates: June 25 - July 8, 2017 and July 9 - July 22, 2017
  • Tuition: $2,250
xmc basic

Cadet Basic Training (CBT) is a two-week, high-adventure introduction to military life. Recruits will train, sweat and find inner-strength with other young people from around the world. Recruits are led by seasoned Drill Sergeants, officers and NCOs who instill a high level of personal pride, self-discipline and internal confidence in each recruit. This is an excellent opportunity to experience the military lifestyle as a primer for the possibility of future military service or attendance at a Service Academy. Highlights of CBT include marksmanship training, rappelling, taking on a confidence course, and a formal Graduation Ceremony as the final event.

Other XMC camps offered: Cadet Field Leader Course (2 weeks), Cadet Combat Engineer Course (3 weeks), Cadet Fitness Challenge (1 week), Cadet Aviation Challenge (1 week), Cadet SCUBA School (1 week), Cadet Ranger School Phase I (3 weeks), and Cadet Ranger School Phase II (3 weeks)

randolph-macon summer

Randolph-Macon Academy

Coed - Front Royal Virginia

Brian Barbour, Randolph-Macon's summer school director, is very proud of their many summer school offerings. They have three programs: a middle school, a high school and a flight program. During the summer there is no military component; students wear polos and khakis and do not march around.

"All students are assigned a mentor who provides academic and social guidance and support throughout the summer school session."

Summer classes are "designed for success," with small classes and a unique feature that allows students to start their homework before the end of class. This gives the faculty more time to work one-on-one with the students. Brian says that "during summer, students grow academically, socially, and learn responsibility and accountability".

Summer school is not just all class work. After class, students get outside and off campus. They go swimming, go bowling, have movie nights and take weekend trips.

This is a unique in-house program: all instructors are R-MA employees, and RMA owns the two aircraft used for training. Students plan to fly a minimum of four hours per week. Advanced flight training is available for qualified students.

R-MA offers a summer flight-training program that includes:

  • Aviation ground school, tailored to soloing in a Cessna 172 airplane
  • Approximately 15-20 hours of dual flight instruction
  • FAA medical examination (if necessary)

Federal Aviation Regulations state that a student must be at least 16 years old to earn solo wings and 17 years old for the private pilot certification. For safety reasons and because students' abilities vary, R-MA does not guarantee either solo status or certification regardless of the flight time or costs incurred.

FUMA Scuba

Fork Union Military Academy

All Boys - Fork Union, Virginia
FUMA Ropes

Fork Union alumni and Admissions Director, Tripp Billingsley, has four great reasons to attend summer school at FUMA:

  • Develop Study Skills
  • Build Academic Confidence
  • Leadership Program
  • Afternoon Sports Camps

Tripp considers summer school as "military school lite." Students still live in a structured environment, have to clean their rooms, march, and attend study halls. Unlike the school year during which all students take only one class (the one subject plan), in the summer students take two each day. Students can either use summer to catch up academically or take creative enrichment classes.

Fork Union Summer School

Students must have completed the 7th grade in order to gain admission to this program. The session lasts for four weeks, and classes are taught by the Academy's expert faculty.

After class, students attend "sports camps" where the academy's coaching staff teaches fundamentals and helps athletes get a leg up over the summer.

Massanutten Military Academy

Coed - Woodstock, Virginia

I spoke with Michael Campbell, Massanutten's Director of Admissions, and he explained that the summer academics are the same as the school year, though at a slightly more relaxed pace. A major strength of MMA's academic program is the small size of their classes, which allow faculty and students to have more one-on-one time than a traditional public school. In the summer, students take one class in the morning and one in the afternoon, followed by athletics time. Many students come to Massanutten to try out the school and others to catch up academically.

Thank you and hats off to the MMA DIs, ADIs, CIs, and all the staff who make things tick like clockwork down there.
