TMI was founded in 1893 by James S. Johnston, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas. In 1911, WTMA moved from the the Government Hill section of San Antonio to a new campus in Alamo Heights. In 1926, the upper school of San Antonio Academy and WTMA were merged, the name was changed to "Texas Military Institute." Girls have been admitted since 1972, and the military program became optional in 1974. After outgrowing two previous campuses, TMI moved to the present campus in 1989. In 2004, TMI changed its name to "TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas." Today, the school educates over 470 students in grades 6-12. Our Corps of Cadets has maintained a long tradition of being designated an Honor Unit with Distinction and the five- and- seven-day residential life programs provide a home away from home for over 50 students. Illustrious alumni include Gen. Douglas MacArthur, several other general officers, members of Congress, university presidents, authors, an ambassador and many other men and women who have been successful in business, education, medicine and the arts.
General Douglas MacArthur was the school's first valedictorian of the Class of 1897.

During his #SeniorChapelTalk, Colby Guillory spoke about his guiding forces from deep within. He shared a few humorous stories of what was clearly destined to be–from winning a bet playing rock, paper, scissors to being chosen for the Punt, Pass, and Kick contest at a football game…and losing. In a moment of clarity, he realized that everything up to this point had happened for a reason…even if the purpose was still yet unknown, “and I can only pray that for whatever moment I was put on this earth to participate in, I have the eyes to recognize it.”
